Mental Health Services

The Buttery has more than 50 years of experience treating substance use disorders and mental health conditions. With both residential and outreach offerings, our programs support people to improve their lives through timely and effective services, concentrating on the person’s individual needs.

Residential Program

HASI-Plus

HASI-Plus is a high intensity, recovery-oriented, community-based transitional rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness and significant functional impairment. The program integrates dedicated clinical and intensive psycho-social support (16-24 hours per day, seven days per week) with stable community-based accommodation.

  • Referrals are accepted state-wide (NSW). Eligible people will be adults (18+) with a diagnosis of severe mental illness (typically schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder), a mental health disorder or experience an extreme level of emotional or psychological distress, which also results in significant functional impairment.

Exclusion criteria include those who are receiving duplicate supports or are at significant risk of harm to themselves or others.

  • People who have been in long-term institutions, such as mental health facilities, correctional facilities or longterm care in hospitals will be prioritised.

  • HASI-Plus is based in Kempsey on Dunghutti Aboriginal Country around 350km north of Sydney and 16km inland from the coast on the Macleay River.

  • HASI-Plus is staffed 24/7. Our team is made up of support staff and their team leader who provide psychosocial supports to participants. There are two Clinical Leads from The Buttery and from MNC LHD. They work in close collaboration with the team and provide a range of holistic and clinical supports to participants.

The program is a transitional rehabilitation and recovery program which integrates clinical support and high-intensity psycho-social support with stable community-based fit-for-purpose accommodation. The program is targeted to support individuals with severe mental illness and functional impairment to continue their recovery journey and live a quality life in the community.

outreach program

The Way Back NSW North Coast

The Way Back NSW North Coast Service offers non-clinical, practical, psychosocial support for people, and their families, experiencing a suicidal crisis or who have attempted suicide delivered by trained Support Coordinators for a period of up to three months.

  • The Way Back NSW North Coast Service Model is delivered by trained Support Coordinators under the supervision of a Clinical Lead (for a period of up to three months).

Through assertive outreach, Support Coordinators co-create safety and support plans and connect participants to available clinical and community-based services, to ensure they are safe and accessing the community-based support that is available. The program incorporates trauma - informed approaches and endorses multi-sectorial methods to health care and safety.

Aftercare is imperative to suicide prevention as it facilitates a gateway for individuals identified as high-risk (of suicidal behaviours). Aftercare provided by our Support Coordinators is based on 4 pillars, to:

    1. Help build strength and resilience

    2. Ensure psychosocial and clinical needs are complementary

    3. Provide tailored support to meet individual needs

    4. Recognise that timely support is critical to managing risk.

    • The participant must be in the North or Mid North Coast region

    • The participant has recently attempted suicide; or is experiencing a suicidal crisis (includes suicidal ideation; and/or engaging in self-harming behaviour)

    • The participant is not already being supported by an existing intensive assertive outreach service that can support their mental health needs

    • No individuals will be excluded from eligibility (subject to the above), due to age, gender, disability, language, or cultural background.

  • Referrals for The Way Back NSW North Coast program are received only from Emergency Departments, Community Mental Health, and other NSW Mental Health Services.
