The Buttery is a not-for-profit, charitable, community based organisation. It is located at Binna Burra near Bangalow in the Byron Bay hinterland in Northern NSW, Australia. The Buttery specialises in the treatment of alcohol and other drug misuse as well as problem gambling. It is guided by the philosophy – Addiction is not a consequence of choice: recovery is.
The Buttery has two residential addiction rehab programs. It also operates community outreach programs in the NSW Northern Rivers Region.
The Buttery’s long-term residential treatment program operates as a Therapeutic Community. There the community of residents itself is the main vehicle for promoting personal change through self-help and mutual support. This program also includes access to half-way houses for those who complete either the three-month or seven-and-a-half month residential program. Co-located with the residential treatment program, The Buttery also conducts MTA, a residential rehab program for people with the desire to move from taking legally prescribed opioid substitutes to a drug free lifestyle.
The Buttery’s five community outreach services cover a wide area the NSW Northern Rivers Region from Evans Head in the south to Tweed Heads in the north and west to Kyogle.
These are: INTRA for adults and teenagers with drug and alcohol misuse problems; b.well a Buttery Wellbeing outreach program for people 13 years old and over whose mental health and drug and alcohol use affect their desired way of life and well-being; Recovery Partners for people with long-term mental illness (run in conjunction with Mission Australia); The Northern Rivers Gambling Counselling Service for problem gamblers and The Buttery’s Family Program, a free counselling service funded wholly by philanthropic support. It is for the family members of Buttery residents and those in contact with the Buttery’s INTRA community outreach service.
